News and Match Reports

Season 2016-2017

9 October 2016

v Maltby 1-1 Abe
Man of the match: Jake
v Dronfield 3-2 Luke 2, Joshua D
Man of the match: Finn
Some really exciting games today - proper cup football!
At times we passed it really nicely with some really good attacking moves as a team and some great individual skill on show. We found the Maltby keeper on top form, and nearly won but his great saves from Conall, Abe, Joshua Sutton-Sprenz, Finn and no doubt some others meant a 1-1 draw.
The Dronfield game we were less dominant but still attacked very well, with Finn leading the line brilliantly, while Abe hit a post and Joshua Dunford looking really dangerous every time he got forward. Luke scored the pick of the goals after a great dribble and finish but I think what pleased me the most was the spirit and determination the boys showed.

18 September 2016

Today v Norton Woodseats (h) 5-9
game 1 3-2 Kristian 2, Paulo (Penalty)
game 2 2-7 Luke 2
man of the match: Paulo & Charlie
Sorry about that - that was a pretty messy second half to the second game to witness but we have great chance to bounce back next week in the cup against the same opposition and Sheffield Rangers in the cup matches.
The first game was a great, exciting spectacle with some really smart football played, particularly up high with the likes of Kristian and Conall linking well - while it was man of the match Paulo who got the winner from the penalty spot. Captain Joshua Sutton and Bob put in great shifts mostly down the wings while Kian held everything together in the middle of the park as usual. Charlie played in both games (because the opposition did) due to Jake's midweek finger injury. But Jake didn't look out of place at all outfield and his direct, strong running up front caused Norton all sorts of problems in a fantastic performance that deserved a goal. Ben and Rejan were reliable in defence and ensured we held on.

The second game started brilliantly with Will P, Luke and Finn linking well with wingers James and Abe and later Will Sharkey but we didn't keep up the tempo and faded out in the second half. We lost a bit of shape when I took James off the left hand side but I was keen to get our foot on the ball in the middle of the park, which he did well with some excellent reading of the game; and despite some heroic defending by Joshua D and Danny we just never really got the kind of dominant and quick passing football that I thought we might get going. The regular chopping and changing won't have helped but I just hoped that doing something different might spark a little more life into us on a very hot day. Their second game team was very big and strong side and finished the game a lot stronger. I'm sure we'll learn from it and improve against them next week.

11 September 2016

V Young Owls (h) 4-13
game 1 3-3 Luke, James, Kristian
man of the match: Joshua D
game 2 1-10 Finn
man of the match: Charlie
Football is a funny old game. We started so brightly and played brilliantly in the first game, really unlucky to go in to the second game at just 3-3 but then in the second game we probably couldn't wait for it to end.
Some of the football in the first game was superb, in particular Luke, Kristian and James linked up brilliantly and created loads of really entertaining football, while Danny, Kian, Joshua D and Jake threw themselves on the line for the team with some heroic efforts. James looked so tidy on the ball and played like someone twice the size! I was also really impressed with how Joshua took it upon himself to go forward in the last few minutes to try to win the game, he clearly wasn't happy with a draw, while Jake again pulled off some fantastic saves.
Unfortunately the second game was very different, but fair play to Young Owls who dominated and deserved the win with some good powerful and skilful football. They ripped through us a little too easily and even changes to how we set up at half time didn't make much difference. We also couldn't get hold of the ball a lot and chances were few and far between, despite a few good efforts and moves. Charlie was the busiest of the keepers and made some smart saves, while Bob and Ben made some great blocks to keep the score down further. I am sure the boys were disappointed but at least their were no tears and a great effort next week and all will be forgotten no doubt.

7 September 2016

Handsworth (a) 3-6

game 1) 1-4 Luke
man of the match: Bob (sorry no trophy, please can you ensure trophys get brought back)
game 2) 2-2 Will P, Kian
man of the match: Kian
A good effort tonight that got better and better and we were so close to coming away with more! The boys really started to entertain you towards the end and earned your support tonight!
I have to keep it short  and I don't like picking individuals out too much but I have to say how super Bob was tonight in the first game, great effort and desire and deserved more. I felt we took a little while to get into the game and were off the pace a little in some periods but it was still a good effort and the boys should be proud of going close.
Then in the second game we took it right to the last few minutes, with Jake, Joshua D and man of the match Kian protecting our goal brilliantly with skill, desire and great team work. We got two good goals including a Kian belter that has been coming for weeks now! Jack skimmed the post and then after the keeper making a good penalty save we should have got another one with a very deliberate and obvious handball which would have levelled it - unlucky for us they went down the other end to score. But that is football and the boys will learn a lot.

4 September 2016

Sheffield Rangers (h) 6-5

game 1) 5-1 Bob, Will P 3, Luke
man of the match: Paulo
game 2) 1-4 Kristian
man of the match: James
'Rose to the challenge award': Danny
A really entertaining couple of games with fantastic effort shown by all the players through out. Charlie made some good saves and his use of area was really good, took on some back passes well and looked really safe all game. He did have Paulo in front of him who had an unbelievable game at the back, I can't think of a time when any one got past him! With Kian doing a great job of covering Paulo and using the ball well in possession it was Bob who opened the scoring from a corned. He worked the left hand side well, with Jack on the right also creating lots of opportunities and getting back well. Will Pucci scored a hat trick and I particularly enjoyed his second which came from fantastic vision from Will Sharkey who supplied him an inch perfect pass. Luke thoroughly deserved his goal after playing one of his best all round games - his effort to track back was exceptional and never stopped running for the team.
The second game was really really hard - but the lads dug in so well and overall deserved the bit of luck they got to hang on in the end. And in the last 15 mins we scored and really battled to even the flow of the game up. Jake kept us in the game many times with some top handling, while both Joshua D and Danny looked really assured defensively against some really clever attackers. Danny did brilliantly today and took another battering for the team. His hard work for the team was really appreciated by all. Abe and James ran miles and miles for the team today and broke well when counter attacking - James was so close to scoring a winner but it was Kristians great strike that done it near the end after battling really well up front. Finn had a tough first half against two really big defenders and got more on the ball in the second half in a deeper role and really worked his socks off for the team, helping out to defend as we didn't have a lot of the ball. The pleasing thing was they kept going and all seemed to get a second-wind in the last quarter of the game, despite having no subs.
